Social Studies- Scottish Farming
We started our Scottish Farming topic which began with Fred the Farmer writing a letter to ask if we would look after his farm while he was on holiday. He set us the challenge of finding out about the different types of farming and what the role of a farmer is. We created our own farmer character to add to the small world.

First we learned about pastoral farming so we knew what animals are found on a Scottish farm but also what produce we get from each animal. We made posters to show our understanding:

Then we watched videos and took notes on what different jobs the farmer has to carry out each day to look after all the animals on the farm. We made a comic strip to show a ‘day in the life’ of our farmer character working on the farm:

Science – Food Chains – Deserts

We continued to develop our knowledge of food chains by researching animals found in the desert. We watched some clips from Planet Earth, took notes of the animals found, made our cover page drawings, and build food chains using the vocabulary producer and consumer:

Art and Design – Value and Colour.

We have been learning about the visual element of value and how you can mix a colour with white to create tints, and mix with black to create shades. We used cool coloured oil pastels when adding colour to our Antarctica drawing, and used warm colours when adding colour to our Desert drawing:

Writing – Instructions

Our writing topic was instructions. In grammar we have been learning about bossy verbs and adverbs. We made posters, listened to songs and played charades to help us remember some examples:

After planning out our instructions, creating a story map and actions, we were ready to write it out. We have been working hard to include everything in the toolkit and use the correct structure:

Outdoor Learning – RSPB Award

We went on a senses walk around the school and took notes on what we could hear, see, feel and smell.

Outdoor Learning

This term we are working towards our RSPB bronze award for exploring and helping nature. So far we have completed a mini beast safari to find mini beasts in our school grounds:

We also completed the Big Schools Birdwatch and then joined a live meeting to find out more about it.

In literacy, our new class novel is ‘The Bog Baby’.

We have been consolidating our sequencing skills by putting events in a logical order.

In writing, we have been learning to describe events and characters feelings. After lots of discussion, we described the events from Bog Babies point of view and included how we thought Bog baby would have felt at each part.

Then we created our own little Bog babies using modelling clay. We then used adjectives to describe their appearance:

Here are all our Bog babies hanging out at Bluebell Wood pond:

Science – food chains

We have started our food chains topic by exploring plants and animals in Antarctica. We watched frozen planet 2 to help us discover what animals live there and find out who eats who.

After that, we were ready to start building some food chains. We are learning some new vocabulary like producer, consumer, predator and prey. A food chain always starts with a plant (producer). The arrow shows the flow of energy from one thing to another.

August

Welcome to Primary 3!

We have started our class novel, Flat Stanley and lots of our learning so far has linked to this.

We have started a kite design for our class charter after lots of discussion about our rights and responsibilities. We have discussed what we need to do so that we access our right to learn and also allow others to learn.

Last year at the taster day we created ‘all about me’ stars 🌟 these are now proudly presented on the classroom door.

In art, we have been learning about the visual element of line. We used different types of lines to add colour to our art work:

Article 2 we have the right not to be discriminated against. We have been learning that we are all unique and have similarities and differences. We worked with a partner to identify things that are the same and different about us. We recorded our ideas in a Venn diagram:

In maths, we started a mini topic of measure to revise our knowledge. We drew a picture of Stanley and measured different parts of his body:

We were then keen to draw a picture of our choice to measure in cm:

Article 15 the right to have friends. We have talked about what it means to be a good friend and what things we can do to spread kindness in our classroom. We will continue to learn about emotions and friendship during HWB lessons. We created  a kindness tree with all our ideas:

Article 24 the right to good health care. Linking to our class novel, Flat Stanley, we have been learning about other rights that are relevant to us. Stanley went to the doctor for information when he was flattened by a bulletin board. So far we have enjoyed setting up our role play area like a doctors:

In science, we are learning about living and non-living things. Particularly what makes something alive. We went outside to find things in the schools grounds that are living and non-living.

In literacy, we have been learning how to write a character study using information from the book.

April 2025

Hi everybody,

Hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday! Here’s a round up of what P2/2 got up to this month.

Everybody did a fabulous job presenting their solo talks to the class. I was so impressed at how much effort everybody had put in and we all learned a lot from each other!

In maths, we have been investigating capacity. We had a great time using the water tray to measure and compare the capacity of different containers.

As the weather is getting nicer, we’re enjoying getting out into the fresh air. We’ve been learning how to skip and we’re already starting to improve. It’s good for our bodies and fun too!

Finally, as part of our knights and castles topic, we have been investigating life in a castle. We know that there are lots of different jobs that people needed to do in order for a castle and its kingdom to be strong and happy. In groups, we have started researching different jobs and will share our findings with the class soon.

Have a good weekend!

Miss Donaldson and P2/2 🙂

March 2025

Hi everybody,

It was lovely speaking to you all at parents’ nights this week. Primary 2/2 have had a very enjoyable March!

In muddy movers, we have been investigating ramps and how we can impact speed. In groups, we worked to make courses where a ball will roll from beginning to end and could be caught. We had a great time!

In PE, we have been working on our badminton skills. We’ve improved a lot and enjoy playing and creating rallies.

We were lucky to be visited by the fire service (including David’s dad!) this month who taught us all about the equipment in fire engines and their purposes. We even got to use the hose!

For World Book Day, we all brought in our favourite book from home. We enjoyed sharing information about these books with our classmates and taking some time to enjoy reading them. We also got to visit the book fair and visited the library to collect a free book each.

We have started learning Mandarin with Miss Xu and are learning lots of new words through games and activities!

Finally, we dressed in red today to raise money for Red Nose Day. We took part in lots of fun activities down in the gym hall. Thank you to the house captains for organising this!

Enjoy the Easter holidays when they come!

February 2025

Hi everybody,

What a quick month February has been! We loved having so many family members join us for our open afternoon this week and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Here are some photos we captured:

In ICT this month, we have enjoyed learning all about coding. We have been applying our skills to solve a range of puzzles.

In maths, the circles have been working on numbers to 100. They did a super job of using tens and units to represent different numbers. The squares and triangles have been investigating weight. Here they are using balancing scales to compare the weights of a range of items.

As part of our dinosaurs topic, we created dances using elements such as turns and gestures to re-enact a stay at a dinosaur museum. We had great fun and our moves were fantastic!

That’s all for this month- I look forward to seeing lots of you at Parents’ Night in a few weeks.

Miss Donaldson and P2/2 ☺️

January 2025

Hi everybody,

P2/2 have had a lovely start to 2025 and have been very busy. In muddy movers, we have been creating obstacle courses with elements we need to go over and under.

In PE, we have started improving our skills in gymnastics. We learned a range of rolls including forward rolls, pencil rolls and teddy bear rolls. We have also been applying our jumping, rolling and balancing skills using different equipment.

We have selected dinosaurs for our topic this term which is something many people in our class have a special interest in! We had great fun hunting around the classroom for dinosaur eggs that gave us facts about paleontologists and dinosaurs. Then, we worked in groups to research and present information about different dinosaur classifications.

December 2024

Hi everybody,

P2/2 have had a very enjoyable December and are ready for Santa to visit!

We worked very hard to create some beautiful pinecones to sell at the Christmas fair. Everybody did a fabulous job!

The cold weather hasn’t stopped us getting out for muddy movers! For the past few weeks, we have been working on creating obstacle courses which included elements we had to go over and under. The best part was getting to test out the other teams’ courses. We also had some fun with the pipes and discovered some fun games we could play using them- including jumping over them and limbo.

A huge congratulations to everybody for a fabulous nativity performance of ‘The Bossy King’. Everybody did so well and we are very proud!

Yesterday, we had our Christmas party. Everybody looked great! We loved dancing and playing games but the best part was when we got a special visitor… Santa came to our party and gave us all a lovely present!

In the run up to Christmas, we have been doing lots of festive activities. We have been listening to the story of the Nutcracker and completing dance sessions as we go. Here we are enacting the nutcracker soldiers and the mice.

We also competed in a team Christmas quiz! Well done to team Elf (Louie, Harriet, Mila and David) who scored the most points in a very close quiz! Finally, we all created a lovely snowman Christmas card.

Hope everybody has an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and has a lovely start to 2025!

Miss Donaldson and P2/2 🙂

November 2024

Hi everybody,

It’s been another busy month for P2/2! We’ve been enjoying collaborating on some morning starters to improve our reading and spelling.

In PE, we have been working on improving our fitness.

We had a fabulous day raising money for Children in Need! We looked great in our pyjamas/own clothes and enjoyed buying books and toys. We also had the winner of guess Pudsey’s birthday in our class!

We were very lucky to get a visit from some reindeer yesterday! We loved getting to feed them some carrots.

Finally, we had our house quiz today and 3 people from our class were picked to represent their houses. Well done to everybody for a fabulous job!

Looking forward to all the festivity next month and getting to perform our nativity which we’ve been working very hard on!

October 2024

Hi everybody,

It was lovely getting to chat to you all at parents’ night this week. P2/2 have had a busy and enjoyable October- here’s what we’ve been up to…

In science, we’ve been learning about space. We decided to head outdoors to model how the planets orbit around the sun at difference speeds. Each orbit is 1 year and it takes the far away planets much longer to orbit than nearby planets!

In muddy movers, we’ve been exploring different ways that we can balance. We can use different parts of our bodies to balance on and can use the equipment in various ways to help with this.

We were very lucky to have received a taekwondo session! Everybody had a wonderful time and learned some new skills.

Finally, we had a wonderful Halloween! We chatted about our costumes, completed a Halloween mystery using our number skills and created spooky silhouette artwork.
